Everybody knows that Gotico is a magical, mysterious place where the streets constantly shift to confuse the unsuspecting tourist or new arrival. Even the experienced can fall into the trap of its interwoven web of narrow streets and alleyways, even long time residents can suddenly become baffled by a missed turning or poorly judged shortcut. Part of its magic is what you can find when you do get lost, as happened with me and Bar Bodega Teo.

Teo is in my opinion the best proper wine bar in the area and though it also serves cocktails, it is the wine that keeps you going back. Above the bar are a range of gigantic barrels with tubes leading down to a series of taps so facilitating a very tasty two Euro cup’s worth. The standard red I drink there, a Penedes, is really decent, whilst for those with a sweeter tooth, there is also a moscatel, a Jerez and, somewhere in-between, a good Priorat. The towering barrels add an austerity to the bar to contrast with the rest of the place’s modern, loungish feel and cool but bright lighting.

The bar has literally the friendliest, coolest barman in town and due to the size and the great service you feel like a friend every time you visit instead of just another customer. The music in the bar is not too noticeable or oppressive, it is a wine bar after all, but tends to be a mix of world and light dance music, the kind of place the Gotan Project was invented for. With its mainly international clientele the place is never overly formal or pretentious as the category may lend itself to. It normally gets busy quite late but is just as good for a quiet drink earlier on in the evening.

Teo has no theme or real gimmick. It’s just a really great, friendly bar with good drinks, a nice atmosphere and cool people inside it.
