L’Ovella Negra is big in many senses. It’s big… umm.. literally in that it is probably the biggest bar in town. It’s big in popularity and easily fills its 200m2 central location. And the drinks are pretty big too, with pitchers of Sangria and Cerveza available at €8 a go. But you have to ask yourself one question, punter; (get it? that’s called a clever play on words) is big big big what you really want on a big night out in the fairly big city?

L’Ovella Negra -often inexplicably referred to as The Black Sheep – is just off the top of the Ramblas near Plaza Catlunya. It’s clandestine entrance, guarded at all times by two large men telling you to be quiet before you even have the chance to scream and make their jobs difficult, conceals a great big huge barn-like interior complete with rustic walls and protruding wooden beams. There is a large smoking area, which you invariably end up sitting in, - realistically what chances are there of ever going out for an evening in Barcelona without a smoker or two in tow – filled with long benches which in turn are filled with lots of young folk being noisy and drinking.

There is no music played but you might be lucky (?) enough to hear bursts of spontaneous song, depending on that evening’s clientele. One thing that I would say is very good about the bar is that you do get a good mixture of native Barcelonans and international people and so the place feels more like an authentic Spanish cervezeria than it might otherwise. The fact that the sheer number of drinkers normally forces you to share tables, means that you are more likely to meet new people is pretty good too.

The thought that there is another L’Ovella Negra out near Marina metro somewhere which is apparently 2000 m2 scares me. Overall, I don’t want to be too negative about the place, after all lots of people like it and it’s got a few things going for it but it’s still just a big old barn and while the beer maybe cheap there’s a BYOA policy in place: Bring your own atmosphere.
