Of the three BCN Tiki bars, Kahiki is the newest, most central and by far the worst. Despite these superlatives, it was not however the first tiki bar I had visited and perhaps I could have been more forgiving if this had been the case. Perhaps the rolling clouds of dry ice and glittering tips of flaming sparklers would have been enough to distract me from the sheer worthlessness of the bar.
Ok so the other two bars are a bit of a trek to get to, and it isn’t as if you’d ever really want to spend a whole night drinking in them, so a central Tiki treat is an appealing thought but sadly this place just isn’t up to scratch. On a Tuesday night last September it took half an hour to have a drinks order taken and another twenty minutes for them to arrive. The staff were unhelpful and evasive, intentionally ignoring our requests for service and telling us to sit down and wait. And it wasn't even that busy a night. The décor is also far less impressive than the other bars, which makes the traditional Tiki darkness seems designed more as a cover for some pretty average design features than as an atmosphere setter.
Perhaps most damningly, even the mugs are less interesting than in the other bars and the menu is vague, limited and without an amusing anecdote in sight. Even after all that, I might have been able to make an exception, to trump its attractive location (right beside Universitat) as a good spot for newcomers to check out, if it weren’t for the fact that the cocktails on offer are actually smaller than the other bars! What do they take us for??!!
