There are certain rules to the music which can and cannot be played at a wedding. Of course we’d all like to hear good music - personally I’d like to have Nick Drake playing for the first dance even despite the ominous associations of his untimely death – but you have to face it that it would never be allowed. There’s a particular kind of music designed especially for weddings. A kind of music so middle of the road that almost anyone can enjoy it. Music so pleasant and inoffensive that sometimes I like to listen to it.
Sugar bar plays this kind of music. It plays scissor sisters, bee gees, radio friendly chemical brothers and the such. And yeah! Sometimes I want to listen to this kind of music whilst drinking a mojito and sitting in a dimly lit bar! Does that make me weird? Should I be looked down upon for this? Well… maybe, but that’s really not the issue here.
Sugar is a really fun little place tucked up in a shifty looking street opposite FonFone on Escudellers. The walls are all red, and there’s a sort of priest hole as you enter for a small group or couple to hide away from the rest of the bar. The little bar is packed with international folk and the more cocktails you drink the more you feel like singing along and dancing in your seat. It’s not swanky, it has no theme or particular look, but it’s a really nice bar nonetheless. So there!
