Located just opposite the Razzmatazz Loft, Bar Pepe is your perfect pre/post gig hangout. It’s friendly, popular, fun and filled with hard-rocking memorabilia. Thanks to its handy location, authentic atmosphere and reasonably priced sandwiches, it’s the only raaaawk! bar in Barcelona worth visiting.

Presumably owned by members of 80’s Spanish rock band Los Suaves, the walls of the bar are covered with autographed guitars, drumskins and photographs of greats from Bob Dylan to Kurt Cobain along with a plethora of rock bands, many of whom appear to have visited the bar in person, in addition to a great shrine to “the smooth ones” themselves. Before and after concerts at the famous neighbouring club there’s really only one place to go, as the acts themselves often identify; it is not uncommon to see less public-shy performers stopping in for a quick bocadillo and beer.

The place is bright but not ugly, popular but never too packed and authentic without being exclusive. It is not quite as cheap as it once was but, due to its out of town location, is still a little less pricey than most and the drinks are plenty big enough. Also popular in the bar are shot wheels, with twelve different chupitos laid out on a sort of board game with a spinner in the middle to help you decide which to sample, and large plastic pitchers for sharing. The football table is a constant focus of attention, but be careful not to be hustled by the expert barstaff.

Of course there is rock music playing but I’ve never noticed it being of a particularly angry or loud variety and even have a vague memory of some classic disco being played, though that could have just been the vodka I was drinking. Pepe is a great place, I like it a lot, if it sounds like your kind of place you should go there. Simple as that.
