Right at the base of the Rambla del Raval is one of the coolest looking bars in the area. Ambar is a bar with large drinks and good music, strange eclectic décor and a friendly atmosphere.
Open in the day as a café-bar, in addition to a good range of cocktails, including an excellent mojito, milkshakes, smoothies, teas and snacky food are also served. In the evenings and especially at the weekends, the place really comes to life with djs or the bar staff choosing tunes. Friday and Saturday nights see the fairly small but open bar fill up to the brim with a largely young, international clientele.
The drinks are priced at about average for Barcelona, with a standard spirit mixer for around €5 or €6, however the size of the drink you end up with is fairly impressive. The soft drinks, such as milkshakes and smoothies, are also large, tasty and freshly made. In the summer you can sit out in front of Ambar and enjoy the bustle of the Raval.
The ramshackle furnishings are very appealing with large comfy sofas and no two chairs in the place matching. Ambar also has occasional art displays, with bright, young painted things adorning the funkily papered walls. Despite its relatively small dimensions it has the right sort of atmosphere and is the kind of place that you wouldn’t look too weird if, spurred on by hearing actual decent music, a need to dance suddenly consumes you. Overall it’s a great non-tacky funky bar with a lot of character. A fantastic, contrasting accompaniment to a trip to Bar Marsella, which is only one block away along Sant Pau, or any trip around the Raval.
