Tucked away on a street you might have difficulty stumbling across more than once, stumbling being the preferred method of transport for I and most of my friends here, Andu is a little cave of wonders that’s well worth seeking out.
Deceptively large, as it snakes back in a zigzag shape from the entrance, the bar is a mix of styles and atmospheres managing to be both cool and classical, medieval and modern. It is beautifully decorated in deep colours with an eclectic blend of furnishings, from loungey arm chairs to leather covered dining chairs, and cool antique tables, are scattered about the different areas of the bar. Offsetting the typical Gotico cave feel, the walls are hung with modern photographic prints and strange paintings, again combining old with new, traditional with contemporary. Andu is beautifully lit which is perhaps the most significant feature in creating its calm, relaxed and somewhat mysterious atmosphere.
On one arched wall behind the bar is one of the largest wine-racks I’ve ever seen, but it needs to be big as Andu has one of the largest selections in town. A fantastic choice, from most major Spanish regions and beyond, the Navarra chardonnay is excellent at eu 3 a glass, which is indicative of the price you can expect to pay.
Though service is generally very good, if you find yourself tucked away in one of the bar’s many corners, at busy times, it may be quicker to head to the bar to avoid being overlooked. The clientele tend to be made up of settled international folk with the odd Catalan group thrown in. There is also a small food menu with tapas, nachos, hummus which varies in a value for money but is always decent quality. The bar never gets crammed full as it is not exactly the place to go for a party, but the majority of tables are normally occupied on peak nights. At such times Andu maintains just the right balance between being a bustling little venue and a place for quiet conversation, which is probably the thing that attracts me most to it. It’s a beautifully designed bar with a truly unique atmosphere that makes you feel privileged just to know about it.
