Named after an elevator because… uhh…it looks like one from the outside L'Ascensor is thankfully a tad larger than your average lift. Very close to Plaza Jaume, just tucked off a thoroughfare in the centre of Gotico, the bar has a lot more to offer than it might appear to at first glance.
I think I took it to be something of an old man’s bar as I had walked past it a hundred times and never seriously thought of going in but after the first time I ventured inside I really became hooked on this quirky little place. The twin sliding doors are the central feature of an ornate façade that conceals a nice sized bar with a fairly large seating area at the back and a large space in front of the bar which fills up on busier nights. The décor is in an elegant nineteenth century style with very unusual glass shaded wall lamps giving the place a bright but warm atmosphere.
The drinks are standard prices for the area but the servings of wine are extremely generous and a very good quality. Excellent cocktails are served and it's nice to watch the mojitos doled out by the dozen. One of my favourite things about the bar though is their choice of music which mixes quality recent and classic indie with a healthy selection of vintage hits. The Killers find themselves alongside Meatloaf and Frank Sinatra follows Franz Ferdinand and you can’t help but tap your foot and sing along. I really like this mix of cool and classic tunes as it reminds you just how universal a lot of great music can be.
On Thursday and Saturday nights a friend of the bar comes to do some really great close up magic which is an impressive sight and an added bonus to an already great bar. Service is good, the atmosphere is perfect and I’ve enjoyed it both in a couple and bigger groups. An all-round excellent quirky little bar with a great location and a really nice feel to the place.
