Ok I know most of our reviews begin; "hidden away on a quiet street…" well Alma is probably the most hidden away bar in El Borne. It’s at the end of a dead end alley, off a little road which most people already have trouble finding, round the back from Santa Maria Del Mar cathedral. Small but plenty big enough for a really good time the bar also doubles as a gallery with regular exhibitions of, typically, bright colourful modern art and interesting photography.
There’s a decent happy hour to be had and they make a mean cocktail from a small but respectable selection. Perhaps because of its location or size, the drinks’ prices are a little cheaper than most in the area. The bar is really coolly lit with a red tint to the whole place and while pretty dim you’re unlikely to have to strain your eyes. There are lots of little light features around the place too like a fairy light sculpture near the bar. In addition to the art the walls are augmented with plaster golden cherubs and other neat touches.
I love the music in the bar and have often had to ask the landlady for names of artists and further recommendations. Cooler than cool indie, punk-pop and electro mix together to give the place a really edgy feel. Despite being called the “Alma - art bar” it really avoids any traces of pretentiousness and serves up good value, a great atmosphere and some amazing tunes. Busy at the right times, but still a well kept secret, Alma is a must – by far one of the coolest bars in Borne.
