Cocktails in Britain are pretty rubbish. They’re brightly coloured, they have stupid names and if you’re a man you’d be lucky to order one without getting laughed at. So isn’t it nice that, in our wonderful city, cocktails are not only a respectable drink consumed by the masses but also really tasty.

And what more could you want than a beautiful bar in the centre of Born with a happy hour seven days a week and some of the best available in town. I wasn’t much of a cocktail drinker before moving to Barcelona but through the careful tuition of bar staff across town I have been transformed into a connoisseur. Rubi (and sister bar Milk) does very good classic cocktails – Daiquiri, margarita, long island ice tea – and simple popular drinks like Mojito, Caparinhia, boozy rouges. The drinks are not overly strong but the ingredients are really good and, on the whole, delicious with a wide enough selection to cater for most tastes. The cocktails are complimented by a full bar and decent affordable food.

It’s the atmosphere at Rubi though that really sets it apart from other bars in the area. It is small and comfortable enough to be cosy, busy enough on most nights to be fun and great for meeting new people. The décor is very stylish with ruby red clinging to every surface from ceiling to floor, subtle lighting and, if you’re lucky to find them free of wildly kissing couples, large bed like seating in the upstairs part of the bar. The staff are really friendly and one really good recommendation for the two bars is that they can sometimes be found eating and drinking there themselves when they aren’t working. Clearly, I spend too much time in Rubi, but they must be doing something right to keep me going back.
