My favourite new bar, and one of my new favourites, Dusk is located right at the bottom of Gotico, one street up from Passieg de Colon. A first glance at the exterior may not show dusk to be much more than one of Barcelona’s many dark and compact bars but beyond the unremarkable façade lies a place with loads going for it, not the least the large, beautifully decorated lounge area tucked just out of site.

A lot of thought has gone into this fantastic bar-restaurant. The décor is plush and theatrical with red curtains hanging on the walls of the lounge, adding a sense of space and mystery, or at least making you curious what lies behind them. There is an excellent chef and kitchen with a good selection of both snacky and more substantial food. The cocktail menu is not only extensive but mixed up by really well trained staff, and most importantly, really tasty. Dusk is a surprisingly large bar for the area and the space is used well, with hanging partitions and designated space for both dining and drinking.

As it has only recently opened, the bar tends to be quiet on weeknights but is already popular on Friday and Saturdays and is a great place to stop off at on a sampling tour of the barrio. Music-wise Dusk plays popular indie, dance and funk all of which goes well with the cool, open atmosphere of the bar. One thing that really impressed me when eating there was the chef, having cooked our food, decided that the calamari he was serving was not to his standards and so asked if we would be happy to wait for a replacement. Such high standards and my experience of the excellent quality food, suggest that the restaurant is more than just an afterthought tacked on to the place’s main function as a bar. The bar staff are really attentive and hospitable and there are always plenty of people around to take your orders, with both bar and table service available.

Dusk is a stunning bar in an excellent location with an atmosphere and service to match. Both cocktail and dining menus are really exceptional and the overall quality goes way above the status quo.
