Both a decent club and occasional live music venue, Magic may well live up to its name. Somewhat hidden away but still very central, just behind the market on the borders of El Borne district the club focuses more on the harder and older side of rock music but normally manages to offer something for all. Around since the seventies, there’s still a large group of people after what the sala has to offer, with those who refused to ever give up the rock and roll lifestyle and others just coming to it.

Club nights offer a good mix of older and more modern, lighter and heavier styles. Like most clubs, the weekend is reserved for the more accessible genres with school nights given over to punk and heavier rock etc. Fridays and Saturday offer all the greatest hits from the whole history of rock and roll from Bill Haley to the Zutons, The Beatles to The Scissor Sisters. As chic as it maybe to spend an evening in the company of a whole host of minimal house music, there is nothing quite so unifying as dancing in a room crammed full of people who all know the song they’re bopping along to. This is what Magic does the best, it gets people dancing without being exclusive or divisive.

The club itself is not the tatty dive you might imagine when you hear the words “rock club.” Neatly decorated, with rock n roll memorabilia, spread over two floors with the toilets, cloakroom and entrance upstairs and the main club down. The club is split up into several rooms with a large bar in the centre. Drinks aren’t too pricy for a club and the measures are good, though as there is only one bar, getting served can be something of an ordeal. Weekends see the place full to bursting by about one or two o’clock and sometimes it’s nice to get there a bit early (very un-Spanish I know) so that you can start the evening dancing with a little space around you. The clientele really is very mixed with people of nearly all ages out to have a good time.

It’s fun, it’s a little different from the average Barcelona style, it’s not exorbitant and it’s even quite clean. A nice alternative night out.
