A small club with a strange name, describing itself as “dedicated to house and techno music”, Moog actually has a reasonably long history in Barcelona, and a jolly good reputation. To find it, head to the bottom of the dreaded Ramblas and dive down a tiny side street, Calle Arc del Teatre. Inside, you can drop off your jacket and you’ll enter a sort of corridor, on one side the bar, and on the other a row of booths, like in an American diner. Here you can sample a beverage (but not a cigarette) and wait for the dance floor to fill up. There are two: the downstairs one facing the DJ box and then upstairs, like a tiny fume cupboard where everyone gathers in together to smoke and dance frenziedly to indie music. Décor throughout is basic, although the right side of filthy.
It’s open every day of the week (!) from midnight till five o clock, and here’s the deal. Friday and Saturday nights when any club in the centre of Barcelona is going to be full to the brim, only the residents (Spanish DJs Robert X, Olmos and Deckard play. Sunday through Thursday however, guest DJs from big name to obscure come over and really bring the club to life. One week in June saw both Andy Wetherall and Funk D’void, and the price of entry is always the same. The size of the club means it fills up quite quickly and the atmosphere is great, the mixed Spanish and international crowd are all friendly and out to enjoy themselves and have a big ol’ dance, rather than see and be “scene”.
Recommended for those who like a really good dance, who don’t have to get up early on weekday mornings, who are discerning but not pretentious in their music taste, and above all who aren’t going to burst into tears if their white pumps get covered in disco dirt.
