La Paloma is a sight to see in Barcelona unrivalled by almost anything including the infamous Sagrada Familia. It’s been hosting nights of dance and debauchery in the Catalan capital since 1903 and it’s still in use to this day as a venue for ballroom dancing for the oldies, before the children of the night to come for tops-off ravin’ to gratuitous house and techno.

Over the years many thousands of famous (from Picasso to Almodovar and many more besides) and ordinary punters have danced beneath its enormous chandelier, the disco lights reflecting back into their dazzled eyes off the gilded balconies and mouldings. It truly is the Moulin Rouge of Spain, and the list of DJs and performers to have rattled its century old foundations are just as legion.

The music policy is somewhat hit and miss, the principle of “danceability” has always come before musical ambition on the part of the DJs, and if you come on a Saturday night to hear the residents play you’ll have fun, but it’s the musical equivalent of paella with no regard for genre or bpm of consecutive songs, just plenty of beats and noise, as they switch between current pop, indie, punk with the odd house classic thrown in for good measure. Come for regular night Rock da Haus to see decadent feather dancers and performers, all suited to the burlesque ambience of the venue.

Your best bet is to check out listings for guest DJs, or the Bollywood Nights and come down on a school night.

Sadly out of action at the moment, due to noise pollution complaints from the local residents, a club of this history and prestige will sure live to dance another day so watch this space for when it gets permission to swing again.
