Click here to view map Click here to launch website I can say without hesitation that the vast majority of Chinese restaurants in Barcelona are appalling. As a true devotee of the cuisine I salivate nightly over dreams of a good quality sweet and sour chicken!!! Whilst it may not be exactly what I’m used to, Out of China is something truly special in these parts. It has food that is well made, uses good ingredients and, most remarkably, is Chinese! Ok, enough exclamation marks already. Out of China serves purportedly “home made” Chinese food. It is an extremely chic restaurant in an uptown location without a waving cat in sight. The walls are decorated with a strange mix of traditional Chinese and 1950s communist iconography all mixed together with a, decidedly western, plush restaurant look. Dining is split between a long bar-style entrance and a large, open back-room with comfortable, rich red seating. The larger space is preferable but both are suitable dining atmospheres. Main dishes are around €5-10 with starters a little cheaper, which for the quality is reasonable but for a full meal can be a little expensive, especially as rice is not included and is in itself an extra €5. The lunch time menu del dia on the other hand is a real bargain at less than €9 for a choice of three courses and a drink from a fairly substantial selection. I, of course, enjoyed the sweet and sour pork and pineapple chicken, whilst the seafood dishes are fantastic too, especially the seasame prawns. This is not your typical take away. The food seems less westernized than most Chinese restaurants with a wider selection of less familiar dishes - it is also one of the few places to sell real Dim Sum in town. Menu del dia aside though, the restaurant is at the steep end of the Barcelona price scale but as a long term resident I feel it’s worth that little bit extra to enjoy a real treat of a Chinese meal in a really nice ambience.
