Les Quinze Nits is the flagship restaurant of a group scattered across Barcelona and Spain. Its location so close to Las Ramblas, on the fairly spectacular Placa Reial, makes it a major draw for tourists, but despite this, once you’ve made it past the queue, it really doesn’t feel too touristy and certainly isn’t a trap.

The clearest indication of this, of course, is the prices. Starters range from €3-5 with mains around €5-10, with the overall style of food fitting into the comfortably loose category of “Mediterranean cuisine” with the occasional Catalan influence. The food is beautifully presented and good quality but occasionally overcooked or brought to the table luke-warm and dining here varies greatly depending on the particular day and time you visit.

In my opinion, the best bargains are found on the starters menu which includes large, appetising salads, tapas staples and a variety of other styles and dishes. As several of the main courses appear comparatively small, it is sometimes preferable to order two starters. On the whole, the main fish courses are larger than the meat alternatives. The Catalan speciality of Fideau (fish in fine noodles) is popular here and a good size, whereas the chicken with herbs is just that, and less than enormous. The best meat dish I have tried is the Iberian pork fillet, which is both delicious and big enough to be filling. Deserts on the other hand are all very cheap and tasty at €3 or less! Those seeking to live up to a Spanish stereotype will be happy to learn that the sangria is some of the cheapest and best in town.

The waiting staff are entertainingly rude at all times, whilst the concierge is efficient and helpful though pretty inflexible - especially when it comes to waiting for absent members of your party, which is totally forbidden. Queuing is almost always required in the evening and I’d recommend getting to the restaurant anything up to half an hour before opening if you want to guarantee a seat in the first dinner sitting, especially during summer.

Les Quinze Nits boasts a good ambience and beautiful décor. Whether out on the terrace with the buskers, acrobats and Gaudi’s gaudy lampposts or within the large, two storey restaurant, the experience of dining here is always pleasurable. It is a good value elegant restaurant in an incredible location though for guaranteed quality every time, nearby sister restaurant La Fonda could be a better bet.
