Hidden on a corner of one of the quietest squares in El Borne, is this shady café, quiet by day, save for a few pottery teachers sharing bottles of red wine and cigarettes, it comes to life at night, when the samosas get sizzled. Two high ceilinged small rooms, crammed with tables and vibrant art make for an unpretentious atmosphere, but give no hint as to the standard of the food. This, is indicated instead by the crowded tables and bar, as those in on the secret flock here to graze on a range of Asian dishes, in tasty, tapa sized portions.
We ate fiery chicken Tikka skewers, Thai filled omelette with crispy veg and a creamy coconutty, peanutty sauce and a veg samosa, from the “Tapas” side of the menu, (nothing over 6.60 euros and plenty under) plus prawn and octopus rolls from the “Sushi Bar” side. The sushi was delicate and well balanced, in a town where sushi varies enormously in quality, and is always expensive, it’s a treat to find the taste outweighing the bill, with 8 pieces of Uramaki (rice rolls) for under 10 euros and Nigri (all fish) for under 5 euros for 2 pieces. It’s a great place to go for nattering, with a selection of tempting tidbits to share whilst there are also rice and noodle dishes, to add to the combination, for a more filling feast.
There’s a few beers, and more than a few wines to choose from, even more than are shown on the list, and locally sourced with care, to swill down your prawns and crispy veg.
Someone in the kitchen clearly knows what they are doing, as every dish had different, sometimes strong but always skilfully combined flavours. The international staff provide a friendly and considerate service, happy to comment and advise on anything in the food or wine menu.
