An El Borne institution, Bar Salvador is king for serving up cheap, delicious lunches to the masses. Despite it’s small, admittedly grubby, appearance it manages to cram the punters in and still get through the short queue of expectant diners, which regularly forms at the peak hour.

The menu is simple, hand written and photocopied each day in preparation, with regular dishes mixed in with seasonal favourites and one offs. Essentially Catalan in its cuisine, standards such as asparagus, white beans, sardines, macaronis and arroz cubana (rice with tomato sauce and egg) served in sufficiently heaped portions make up the starters board with an even more substatntial set of choices reserved for the mains. Salvador does excellent chicken, cod and tuna all in different styles and served with tasty salsas and vegetable accompaniments with nothing on the menu likely to be above Eu 5. Their ultimate dish however – and most definitely the one that keeps me coming back for more, is the unparalleled bistek amb patatas (steak n chips). It may not be the thickest cut of steak in the world but it’s incredibly tasty and at 4.75 for what – to me at least – amounts to a whole lunch, it’s the business. I wish I could cook steak this tasty but then if I could I wouldn’t have to eat out at restaurants so much.

The service is fast, hectic and extremely friendly with the waiters always willing to lend a hand – in Spanish or English – if your mastery of Catalan isn’t up to scratch. There’s wine from the barrel too, which provides a cheap drop to go with your lunch and an overall feel of Bar Salvador being a genuine, functioning local hangout where us extraneros are welcome too. It may not look like much but bar Salvador serves great, filling food at some of the lowest prices in town with an atmosphere that can’t be rivaled.
