Ever since we arrived in Barcelona my friends and I have been searching for a really good Mexican restaurant. We’ve tried all the well known ones like Rosa Negra, El Ultimo Aguave and Margarita Blue, but for some reason there just didn’t seem to be a truly authentic, delicious Mexican among them. It turns out we were simply looking in the wrong place as, far away from the typical restaurant districts of Borne, Eixample and Gotico, Las Mañanitas has been waiting for us all along.
The great thing about Mexican food is its universality. There is no one particular ingredient which you can’t find across the world and the price should reflect this. Yet for some reason, maybe it’s the Spanish disinterest in anything slightly spicy, Barcelona has yet to truly grasp the joy of this oh so delicious cuisine. Las Mañanitas is slightly out of the absolute centre, located on Barcelona’s longest thoroughfare of Gran Via, in a largely unexceptional residential area. Advertising itself as Tex Mex and providing just that in colourful, unpretentious surroundings.
It’s hard to say exactly what sets this grungy bar like space apart from the pretenders but how about excellent margaritas, a menu which includes authentic dishes like queso fundido and mole sauces or the simple fact that they do the basics like burritos, nachos and tacos, just so well! Whilst overall the prices are not hugely cheaper than other restaurants, nothing is exorbitantly expensive and there are cheap options, with nachos at around €5 and individual tacos at less than €3. There are also all the prerequisites like Mexican beers and guacamole and oh yeah, the best thing they do by far, which is somehow four million times better than anyone else’s in town, a simply heavenly homemade tomato salsa.
There isn’t really much more to say about it than that, I don’t need to give you a long detailed break down of the menu as you can probably guess half of it. The service is excellent, it’s family run and the waiting staff speak Spanish and English, the atmosphere is informal and friendly as it should be. The place tends to be busy with those in the know at peak times, there’s a great value menu del dia on weekdays and if you have any interest in Mexican food then you should go there immediately.
