After a weekend away in glorious San Sebastian in the Basque Country we decided to check out exactly what Barcelona had to offer in terms of pinxos bars. We tried four places in the Born/Gotico are and much to our horror after the delights we had sampled the weekend before were generally disappointed despite some previous recommendations of places like Golfo de Bizkaia and Euskal Itzea.

Sagardi is a small chain with restaurants in five cities in Spain including four in Barcelona. They most central location is in Born near the church of Santa Maria del Mar. It is a popular location and if you haven't tried pinxos before (essentially pieces of bread topped with a variety of delicious substances) it's a fun way to eat. The atmosphere is often a major factor in the experience with everyone bustling to get to the bar.

The serving method can be a little daunting at first if you are unsure of the etiquette, but whilst some places serve you, most will give you the required number of plates and leave you to get stuck in. First up the bread alone in Sagardi is much better than the other places we tried - fresher and crisper which does make a big difference. We tried a good selection including montaditos of croquettas, serrano ham, ham and melted cheese wrapped in breadcrumbs, xistorra fried sausage and a mixed seafood salad.

The general quality is quite impressive and each thing we sampled was delicious and well put together. Whilst it may not be quite up to the standards of that epicurean heaven of a region from where the food originaly sprang, Sagradi is certainly one of Barcelona's best options for Basque cuisine as well as being cheaper than the others we tried with reasonably priced drinks, clean attractive restaurants in nice locations and attentive staff. Though we hear the best in town is Tatiki Berri in Eixample (review to follow shortly) for the moment Sagardi is a very good, fun and delicious option for Pinxos which we will undoubtedly revisit.
