Maoz is a rare thing in Barcelona; a good international take-away. Though it is actually an international chain, its locations are few and far between, though Barcelona itself is one of the few cities to have more than one, with branches both on Las Ramblas and Carrer Ferran. Essentially a vegetarian salad and falafel bar you can serve yourself up a treat in either a white or wholemeal pita bread or a plastic salad box. Potential fillings include cous-cous, pickles, carrots, salad, olives, jalapenos, mushrooms, chickpeas, spicy tomatoes, cucumber salad and less than lovable cabbage. The great thing is though that you get to make it all up to your own specifications and desires as once you’ve been given your container you are free to run wild and even refills aren’t frowned upon.
I normally go for the pita option which also offers hummus and falafel for extra. Sauces include yogurt, tahine and garlic mayonnaise as well as spicy and peppery sauces in the main salad cart. One of Maoz menus are a meal in themselves, easily big enough to keep you going for an evening as are individual salads or pita for a couple of euros less. The menus come with chips and a drink and are priced from about €5. The chips are more like potato wedges and are extremely tasty though also incredibly salty and I’m not quite sure I’ve ever eaten a whole packet of them. Fast and cheap, convenient and healthy you won’t find a better take-away in town, especially not at 2.30 in the morning!
