Despite some problems in Barcelona with the quality of imported Asian cuisines (that’s right I’m talking to you Indian and Chinese food!) it excels for some reason at Japanese. One perennial problem with Sushi however is price. The dishes are very small, they tend to be quite expensive and to eat enough to actually fill you, short of going to one of the many, rather less appetising, all you can eat buffets, can be very expensive. Hello Sushi solves this problem by providing delicious, good quality sushi at extremely affordable prices.
Not only are Hello Sushi’s prices generally low, they even offer mid-day and evening set menus which reduce the cost even further. The portions are still small but you get plenty for your money and a great range of selection. Sushi wise they have all that you would expect, plus some dishes with a hint of originality such as the salmon rolls with a cream cheese filling (around €8 for eight rolls). “First lady” of Japanese cuisine, Yukie Horita, is the head chef and her influence is felt in the breadth of choice on the menu. Japanese salads are complimented with foreign ingredients (I particularly liked the tropical salad with mango) and there are soups both basic and out of the ordinary. For most though it’s what’s on the evening menu de gustacion (tasting menu) that is most important as, at €15 for three courses it’s simply too good value to be ignored.
We started with the ever reliable Miso soup followed by a choice between two salads and a small platter of six or so Makes (basic sushi of a vegetable of fish filling wrapped in rice and seaweed such as California rolls) . The third course is the most substantial which, in addition to gives you the most likely choice of a mix of ten delicious Ngiri sushi (seasoned rice with a slice of raw fish on top, such as Sake Ngiri (salmon). Altogether you are given plenty of food for your money and the lunch time menu at just €8.50 is incredible value and also includes a desert.
From the price you might guess Hello Sushi to be less than beautiful in it’s décor and setting but nothing could be further from the truth. Located on an entirely respectable street just a few minutes off the ramblas, it’s large studio like space is well used with elegant design touches. As you enter there are a row of low tables with cushions for floor seating whilst the large back part of the restaurant is dedicated to more typical dining style. Colourful prints and interesting lighting abound to create a modern and comfortable dining environment. Service is generally good with a mix of Japanese and Spanish staff and bi-lingual menus. Hello Sushi is easily good enough to compete with some of the best in town, while on price it cannot be beaten. Highly recommended.
