I have one backup Sunday restaurant: El Tropezón. When nothing else is open, and you've walked around and already got lost in the old city at least three times, El Tropezón is there, waiting for you. Not to say that this restaurant should only be thought of as a fallback, on the contrary I've found myself, at times, craving El Tropezón before, but you have to know what to order. And I do, and so will you.

It falls under the category 'typical Spanish tapas' meaning ham, cheese, sausages, fried things and seafood. Steer clear of the fried food here (that means no croquetas or bombas), most of it ends up tasting too mushy and all the same; instead, go for some meat like xistorra (red, greasy sausage) or pincho moruño (pork shish kebab). You can't miss the pan con tomate, which also accompany the xistorra and pincho. And one of my new favorite dishes is the mushrooms. Doesn't sound so special right? What about perfectly tender, brown mushrooms bathed in a garlic buttery sauce presented on a silver platter? It is special, I promise.

And not only is El Tropezón open on Sundays, it's open late. If you've missed your chance for a decent Saturday dinner because everything was booked, or you get the munchies at one in the morning, you know where to go. Take a seat in the completely wooden room, including dark, picnic-like table and benches (this is what drew me in the first place to this reliable corner restaurant), get yourself a caña or a pitcher of (cold) red wine, and write down your order. No failed attempts at foreign language communication involved, just pen, paper, and plate numbers. Remember to stick to meats and that the Spaniards know their pork!
