Hidden on a small, alley of a street, on the very edge of the Barrio Gotico, just behind the enormous Post Office at the foot of Via Laietana, is Fantastik, a great stop for gifts, accessories, bits for the home and all manner of knick-knacks. Boasting a range of 300 products from 4 continents (which one have they missed?). There are brightly coloured Mexican record bags, tin trays, furniture decorated with hundreds of coloured tin pop cans, toy robots, carpets, Virgin Marys, purses, T-shirts, Mexican wrestler masks, mobiles and decorations. . . .the list goes on.
From furniture (made with recycled cans, as before) to rolls of laminated fabric in mad prints from Mexico, right down to little trinkets and postcards, plus a small section of clothes on display in the mezzanine, the whole shop is a carefully arranged riot of colour and kitsch, and attracts frequent write ups in Spanish magazines, because the mad kaleidoscope of colours and highly stacked goods makes for such good photographs. With tons of stuff for less than 20 euros, or even single figures, this feels like an innovative shop, rather than a test of your spending power, and the staff are always friendly and sweet to boot. Even in such a paradise of kitsch as Barcelona, this shop somehow feels more authentic because everything is imported form such exotic locations, and also because it’s the only one. . . .It’s a true Barcelona original!
