One of the most visually curious shops in Barcelona, it took me a long time to work out what Bubo even sold. Despite being in my neighbourhood, just across from the church of the Santa Maria Del Mar, I at first dismissed it as a posh makeup shop. The reason for me misidentifying what is, in actual fact, a high-end producer of sweets and cakes is the absolutely incredible level of presentation through out the store.
The majority of items are stored in attractive glass cases, normally with hordes of people crowding around to wonder at them. What I mistook for blocks of makeup were in fact Bubo’s multicoloured macaroons. They have large chocolate and fruit sponge based cakes to die for, delicious chocolate bon bons and nothing is badly priced considering the exquisite appearance and ultimate deliciousness of everything on sale. With all designed by award winning (including world’s best chocolate cake) pastry chef Carles Mampel, you need little more guarantee of quality. Bubo is a rare thing in Barcelona, which in terms of dessert is something of a desert, a truly great pastelería.
