The kind of shop I dreamed about going to as a child, El Ingenio is a little box of delights, just tucked away in a side street parallel to Las Ramblas. One of the oldest shops in Barcelona, it sells everything from professional juggling equipment to joke rubber chickens, it is a true old style party shop. The front of the shop is given over to small toys, tricks and jokes whilst in the centre they have a massive selection of elegant, fun and somewhat frightening papier mache masks, whilst the back is devoted to costumes and juggling equipment (from the cheap/beginner to the absolute pro).
I’m yet to actually purchase anything there but I still go regularly to be amazed by the colours and sights on display. As someone who still hasn’t lost the belief that there is potentially nothing more fun than the contents of a party bag, this is certainly the place for me. I’m sure its appeal is fairly universal and they certainly have a selection wide enough to show you something that might surprise, or at least offer suggestions for gifts for those young, or young at heart, enough to appreciate El Ingenio’s wares.
